The answer depends on you and your priority for massages. What are you looking to benefit from massages? Stress relief and relaxation after a hard working day? Or something more prominent like treating chronic health conditions or injuries?
The choice is yours but depending on your situation, the frequency of massages definitely varies and of course, the more the better!
In this blog, we will discuss some examples of why people get massages and how often they should be done to benefit you the most.
Stress relief and relaxation
If you are looking to reduce stress after a long day or just need some time to relax, a massage once every two weeks definitely helps. A massage helps to relax the body by loosening up the muscles and releasing heat away from the body.
Applying the right amount of pressure in certain areas such as the scalp, back of the neck and big toe also helps to relieve stress and calm the mind down after a hard day. This works to improve blood circulation and get your heart pumping at a healthy pace.
However, if you experience high levels of stress on a continuous basis, seek massages at least once a week to let the mind and body heal. If you feel your body is tense or tight in the shoulders or lower back consistently especially from sitting in front of the computer for a long period of time, it is telling you it's time to get a massage!
Enhance body strength and flexibility
Most athletes who practice intensive sports get at least one massage per week to maintain athletic performance. This helps to improve range of motion and upper body strength, increase joint flexibility, relax overused muscles, and reduce muscle cramping and tightness.
Before a big game, it's common for athletics to get sports massage therapy to focus on areas of the body that needs attention. However, if you are only looking to improve physical strength and wellness, it is recommended to get massages once every 2-3 weeks.
Treat chronic health conditions and injuries
Those who suffer from chronic health conditions such as back pain, migraines or headaches, or joint inflammation seek regular massage treatments once a week for 3-4 weeks. If there is an improvement in the results, the frequency is lowered to once every 2 weeks. Regular monthly maintenance is also recommended to make sure the symptoms are contained.
Chronic health conditions build up over time after performing the same activity or movement over and over again and thus, tension builds up leading to pain. Therefore more frequent massages treatments will be needed to get the body back to normal.
If you have suffered from recent acute injury, get a massage treatment as soon as you can. This helps the injured area heal faster and make it less painful. However, do not overdo the massages as it can overwork the injured area. Ask for minimal pressure and short time frames to start and work your way up until you feel comfortable. Always go according to your pain tolerance!
Ease pregnancy
Prenatal massage therapy is excellent for expecting mothers to help reduce stress and anxiety, relieve muscle tension and aches, decrease symptoms of depression and improve the overall health of the mother and newborn.
A Swedish relaxation massage is most appropriate for expecting mothers and can be done as often as needed. It improves blood circulation in the body and regulates hormones to reduce depression. Prenatal care is extremely important to a healthy development of the newborn and should not be neglected!
Extra care and attention are needed during pregnancy in the first trimester because the mother's body is very fragile and there is a higher risk of miscarriage. This is why most massage facilities do not recommend prenatal massage in the first trimester.
Always seek certified body massage therapists who are trained in prenatal massage if you are uncertain. They will position your body in the most comfortable way possible and apply the appropriate pressure in order to benefit you the most.
