In this blog post, we'll discuss the nature of sensitive skin and our best recommendation regarding spa treatments and product use.
Skin Analysis
Before we start with our facial treatments, a skin consultation is performed regarding anything that the beauty therapist needs to know. For example, if you have sensitive skin, allergies to any particular ingredients and so forth. It is absolutely safe to have a facial if you have sensitive skin. We'll also discuss your skincare routine if any and the products you are using.
Avoid Drugstore Products
The products you use make a big impact on the well-being of your skin. We recommend avoiding using drugstore brands and opt for high-quality products that will treat your skin well. Drugstore brands contain ingredients of lower quality and can easily dry out your skin, cause breakouts and make your skin more sensitive.
Choose Products Made for Sensitive Skin
Once all the essential information is discussed, we assess your skin under the light. We look for skin sensitivity, active breakouts, acne and other signs that require special attention. Brands such as Dermalogica, Eminence, and Yonka carry products that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin types. The formula is light in consistency, fragrance-free and contains no parabens, dyes, and harmful chemicals that will irritate the skin.
Consult Your Doctor If Conditions Worsen
You will find that your skin is calmed and soothed after using these products during the facial. If your skin happens to react to any of the products, don't be alarmed! It is normal if you have sensitive skin and any irritation and redness will dissipate in an hour. If these symptoms don't go away after 2 hours and start to worsen, discontinue the use of all the products used and consult your doctor immediately.
Avoid Peel Facial Treatments
This indicates that your skin is too sensitive to the products being used. In this case, we recommend opting for products with a more gentle nature and formulated with natural ingredients. Also, we don't recommend peel facial treatments if the level of sensitivity in your skin is high because the strength of the chemical can be too strong. However, if you have mild sensitivity, we can start you out with the lowest strength and your skin will have little to no reaction. Read our blog post for more information about chemical peels.
Microdermabrasion Will Help Your Skin Heal
While a chemical peel may not be suitable for sensitive skin, microdermabrasion is perfectly safe. In fact, microdermabrasion will help heal your skin because the buffing away of dead skin cells, dirt and impurities and oil will allow your skin to breathe. Microdermabrasion may sound intimidating to those with sensitive skin, but the treatment itself is non-invasive and will not cause adverse reactions. You may feel more tingly compared to those without sensitive skin, but it's completely normal.
LHE Treatments Can Be Done or Not
To qualify for LHE (Light Heat Energy) for hair removal or skin rejuvenation, it depends on how sensitive your skin is. Before we start with any LHE treatment, a consultation and test patch is performed on a small area of the skin being treated. After 24 hours, if your skin does not show any reactions, we will continue with LHE treatments. But if you have a reaction, treatments stop here. Read our blog post for more information on LHE hair removal and skin rejuvenation.
